Better Than Kids

Why do people bang on about kids as if they're the most amazing thing ever? What's so great about not being able to go out when you like? Wiping shitty arses? Having your favourite program interrupted or totally missed?

Me, I've opted out and chosed Cats instead. Likewise other friends of mine have also decided that kids suck, and animals rule.

My Cats are a constant source of entertainment and affection, and when we want to go out, they can look after themselves. Or else, we can put them in the local deluxe cattery and rest assured they will be treated well while we enjoy sunny beachs in far off lands.

Let's be honest, having kids is the end of your life for the next 20+ years! If you're lucky, when they leave home you can pick your life back up and get back to how things used to be. But in other cases people seem to find they no longer remember why they got married and become one of those hatefull mockerys of marriage where they constantly bitch and moan about each other.

So have pets instead, they're better than kids in every way!

Interesting theory, and for the fist 30 years of my life I couldn’t agree more, however the theory troubles me and this is why:

The basis of you point of view is only one of modern westernised social trend, living in a world were its possible to live selfish life styles. Don’t get me wrong this isn’t a personal attack, were all victims of this and there is no escape, proof of that can be seen with a large percentage of young mothers and even couples who still live there lives without any or much responsibility for their siblings. It’s also common place that ‘kids these days’ run riot, it’s a near impossibility to go for a Sunday lunch out, without been annoyed beyond recognition because parents don’t control their kids, they want to be left alone to drink, eat and chat too ‘THERE YOUR KIDS! GET THEM UNDERCONTROL’

However, this is not the children’s fault; this is the selfish nature of modern people, so credit to anyone who accepts that and chooses to have cats instead of kids.

The bigger picture however, is that it’s in our instinct and basic nature to raise families. Any human civilisation ever has always based life upon family, and family values. It was that long ago in England, it was common for couples to have ten or more kids. I know this leads into a massive topic of times and reasons (life expectancy, disease etc) but the point is, if you don’t have a family what have you got?

I’m still making my mind up on some of these theories but at the moment I conclude a couple of things. I think our generation have taken longer to grow up than any before us, It’s only recently seeing my own parents growing older that I actually take on board they won’t be around forever, and I will no longer be the baby of my family. And love, life and happiness are all worthless unless shared.

So, it’s easy to see all the negatives about other peoples kids, these are only so because of modern selfishness. And I honestly believe, you’re more likely to regret not having your own family when you’re older than you are to regret having kids, in fact it’s extremely rare to hear somebody say they regret having children. At the end of the day, weather it makes and sense or not, we are here to reproduce.

So there you go, I’m starting to think (because I’m a modern selfish 21st Century guy) that Kids or Cats? Fuck it I’ll have both!
